Biography
Alexander is an Australian-born organist, musician and music theorist, based in Basel, Switzerland.
From an early age, Alexander was fascinated by music, being raised in a deeply musical household. He began piano and recorder lessons at the age of 4, and subsequently studied the violin and the French horn.
At 14, Alexander was afforded the opportunity to commence pipe organ lessons through a scholarship offered by St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral in Adelaide. Within a few short years, he established himself as one of Adelaide’s leading organists, performing with local and national orchestras and choirs.
Simultaneously, Alexander continued to develop as a recorder player, taking up studies with Lynton Rivers at the Elder Conservatorium of Music aged 16. He graduated from his BMus in Recorder Performance with Honours (First Class) in 2014, having been awarded an Elder Conservatorium Director’s Award for Excellence in Studies every year during his term. In 2012, he was also awarded the Helpmann Academy Classical Music Award for Excellence, having achieved the highest grade in his undergraduate final year recital, and was granted the Khurana Frost scholarship in order to facilitate his growing interest in furthering his studies in Europe.
In 2015, Alexander was granted a place at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, a world leader in early music research, education and performance. Having elected to focus upon his studies as an organist, he completed his Masters in Early Music Performance in the class of Tobias Lindner in 2017, and subsequently completed a second Masters in Music Theory at the same institution under the tuition of Florian Vogt in 2020.
Immediately upon completing his studies at the Schola Cantorum, Alexander was invited to serve as a music theory tutor for the Hochschule of Music in Trossingen, Germany, a position he held from 2020-2022. He has also taught at numerous primary and secondary schools in Australia and in Switzerland, and has served as organist or assistant organist in several churches. At present, he is the organist for the Catholic Church of St Peter and St Paul in Oberwil, BL, where he also serves as conductor of the church choir.
Alexander is currently based in Basel, and frequently performs across Switzerland and Australia, as well as having played concerts in England, France, Germany, Austria, and Lithuania. He is a frequent collaborator and professional partner with his wife Weronika – herself an accomplished harpsichordist and organist – and enjoys the challenge of realising projects in cooperation with her.
